One Year in Port Elizabeth!

  • Timon

Time has passed so quickly! It’s now one year since we landed in Port Elizabeth (PE) in South Africa. An occasion for a brief review, an outlook and what we are doing right now.

On August 14, 2019 we landed in PE. We look back very gratefully on God’s guidance and provision in all the big and little things. We have now settled in well and know our way around the city to some extent. We were also able to make some valuable contacts and friendships. A highlight was without a doubt the birth of our Luisa and the perfect timing to have Annis parents from Germany visit us at that point. Language studies got off to a good start despite the lockdown that began in March.

A few impresions from Port Elizabeth:

…we still find ourselves in a very long lockdown. But restrictions are slowly easing. Almost all shops are open again. Life here has adapted very much to all the corona measures. Only social contacts are still very limited. Instead of meeting in the apartment, you simply meet in the open air for a walk or something similar.

We are happy that our two oldest kids have been able to go to kindergarten again since the beginning of July. It was very good for them to be around other children again after three months of isolation! We also did a little interview with them and asked how they experience their new home in South Africa. Although the interview is in German, you might enjoy their smiles and giggles:

There are still many question marks about how one can serve among the AmaZioni in the current situation. Government guidelines make this almost impossible. Please pray that creative ways will be found. Missionaries are considering to offer correspondence courses online, but most AmaZioni do not have real access to the Internet. Yet we know that Jesus continues to build his church. In the midst of the headlines of crises and covid, we don’t want to lose our focus on what God wants to do. His peace will guard our hearts and minds.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Phil 4:6-7
